Many providers offer some kind of seasonal or vacation hold, but the names, fees and rules differ, and they rarely advertise them. We don't list provider-specific terms here because they change; instead, here's what to ask, and which services usually need to stay on.

Services that often need to stay on

In a cold climate, an empty home usually still needs heat to protect the pipes. The American Red Cross advises that if you'll be away during cold weather, leave the heat on, set no lower than 55°F. Power may also be needed for a sump pump, security system, leak sensors or a dehumidifier. Before you turn anything off, read our home protection guide.

What to ask each provider

  • "Do you offer a seasonal, vacation or snowbird hold? What's it called on your side?"
  • "Is there a monthly fee during the hold, and is there a fee to restart?"
  • "Is there a minimum or maximum length?"
  • "Will I keep my equipment, my price and any promotion when service resumes?"
  • "Can I schedule the restart date now?"
  • Get the answer in writing (email or chat transcript), with the hold and restart dates.

Subscriptions and memberships

  • Streaming: cancel or pause the ones you won't watch; most are easy to restart.
  • Gym and club memberships: ask about a freeze, or a reciprocal location near your winter home.
  • Newspapers and meal kits: ask about a vacation stop or a delivery address change.
  • Lawn, pool and pest service: reduce rather than cancel if the home needs to look lived-in.
  • Use our Subscription Audit Worksheet to find charges you forgot.

Lower energy use at both homes

Unplug electronics and small appliances you won't need, and set the water heater to a vacation or low setting if your model has one (check the manual). See our weatherization guide for low-cost fixes at either home, and our electric bill guide.

FAQ

Can I turn off the power completely?

Usually not a good idea if heat, a sump pump, alarms, leak sensors or a dehumidifier depend on it. Ask your insurer too; some policies have conditions for unheated or unoccupied homes.

Does every internet provider offer a seasonal hold?

Not all, and terms vary. Ask directly and get the fee and restart date in writing.

Is canceling cheaper than pausing?

Sometimes. Compare the hold fee with the cost and hassle of restarting, including any loss of promotional pricing.
