VA Disability Payment Dates: Why Your October 2026 Payment Comes Early
By the ForLowerBills Editorial Team · Reviewed by the ForLowerBills Editorial Team against official sources · Last updated: October 27, 2026 · Sources checked: October 27, 2026 · How we research
Watch your bank account this week. VA disability compensation for October 2026 is scheduled to arrive on Friday, October 30, 2026, not on November 1. That's good news for your budget, but there's a catch: your next deposit won't show up until Tuesday, December 1, 2026. The rest of this guide covers why the date moved, the full payment schedule through the end of 2027, and some ways to stretch each check further.
When will my October 2026 VA payment arrive?
The VA pays disability compensation in arrears. You get paid for a month after it ends, usually on the 1st of the next month. So the payment for October 2026 is normally due on November 1, 2026.
November 1, 2026 is a Sunday. Federal law (38 U.S.C. § 5120(e) (opens in a new tab)) says that when the 1st falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the VA should deliver the payment on the Friday before. When the 1st is a federal holiday, the payment goes out on the weekday before the holiday. That moves October's payment up to Friday, October 30, 2026. The U.S. Treasury's 2026 benefit payment schedule lists the same date.
That also means you'll see two VA deposits in October: the September benefit on Thursday, Oct. 1, and the October benefit on Friday, Oct. 30. No regular VA payment lands in November. December gets two: Dec. 1 (for November) and Dec. 31 (for December, since Jan. 1, 2027 is New Year's Day).
Heads-up: If you see the October date given as "Friday, Oct. 31," that's a mistake. October 31, 2026 is a Saturday. The correct date is Friday, October 30, 2026.
Your bank may post the money a little sooner or later depending on how it handles direct deposits. The VA date is the official one.
VA disability payment schedule: late 2026 and 2027
We worked out these dates from the VA payment rule above and checked each one against the calendar. The 2026 dates match the Treasury's published schedule. The VA can make changes, so check your payment history on VA.gov to confirm.

*Federal offices observe the Jan. 1, 2028 holiday on Friday, Dec. 31, 2027, so this payment could come a day earlier. The Treasury hasn't published its 2027 schedule yet. Check VA.gov as the date gets closer.
Months with no payment in 2026–2027
When a payment moves into the previous month, the next calendar month has no regular deposit. Plan ahead for November 2026, January 2027, May 2027 and August 2027. If January 2028 follows the same pattern, it will have no deposit either.
Is there a VA cost-of-living increase (COLA)?
- 2026 rates (in effect now): VA raised compensation by 2.8%, effective December 1, 2025. For example, a veteran with a 100% rating and no dependents gets $3,938.58 a month. See the current VA compensation rates (opens in a new tab).
- Next increase: On October 14, 2026, the Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% COLA (opens in a new tab) for Social Security beneficiaries. VA compensation usually goes up by the same percentage, but Congress has to pass a law for the VA increase. When we checked on October 27, 2026, the Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2026 (S. 4487 (opens in a new tab) / H.R. 8552 (opens in a new tab)) was still pending. If it passes as written, the increase would start December 1, 2026, and the first payment to include it would be the one on Dec. 31, 2026. We won't list new VA dollar amounts until the VA publishes them.
Budgeting tip: plan for the long gap
An early payment isn't extra money. It's the same money, just sooner. Between Oct. 30 and Dec. 1, you'll wait 32 days for your next deposit. Here's how to keep it from catching you short:
- Set aside November's bills right away. When the Oct. 30 deposit arrives, move rent or mortgage, utilities, and car payments into a separate account or envelope.
- Check your autopay dates. If a bill drafts on Nov. 1–5, make sure the money is still there after the weekend.
- Ask to change due dates. A lot of utilities, card issuers, and lenders will move your due date if you ask, often to a few days after the 1st.
- Watch the holidays. Two deposits in December can feel like extra cash, but the Dec. 31 payment has to cover January.
How to check your VA payment status
- Payment history: Sign in at VA.gov payment history (opens in a new tab) with a verified Login.gov or ID.me account to see past payment dates and amounts.
- Text alerts: In your VA.gov profile, go to Notification settings and turn on text alerts for disability and pension deposits.
- Direct deposit: Update your bank information at VA.gov direct deposit (opens in a new tab). Watch out for scams: the VA won't call or text asking for your banking login. See our guide to money scams to avoid.
- Missing payment? Call the VA at 800-827-1000 (TTY: 711), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET.

Property tax exemptions (vary by state)
Most states lower property taxes for disabled veterans. Some take a fixed amount off your home's assessed value, and some fully exempt veterans rated 100% or permanently and totally disabled. Rules and deadlines are set by each state and county. Contact your state veterans affairs office (opens in a new tab) or your county property appraiser to find out what you qualify for. See the property tax section of our Veterans & Military guide.
Utility and phone help
- LIHEAP: The federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program helps with heating and cooling bills. LIHEAP (HHS) (opens in a new tab). Already behind? See help with utility bills you're behind on.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my October 2026 VA payment early?
The October payment is normally due Nov. 1, 2026. That's a Sunday, so under federal law the VA pays on the Friday before: Oct. 30, 2026.
Will I get a VA payment in November 2026?
No regular payment comes in November 2026. The October benefit arrives Oct. 30, and the November benefit arrives Dec. 1, 2026.
When is the December 2026 VA payment?
Thursday, Dec. 31, 2026. Jan. 1, 2027 is New Year's Day, a federal holiday.
Will VA disability go up in December 2026?
Social Security announced a 3.6% COLA for 2027. The VA increase still needs Congress to pass the 2026 COLA act. If it passes, the increase would start Dec. 1, 2026, and first show up in the Dec. 31, 2026 payment. Check VA.gov for official rates.
How do I check if my VA payment was sent?
Sign in to VA.gov and open "View your VA payment history," or call 800-827-1000.
Does an early payment mean I got extra money?
No. It's the same monthly amount, just sooner. Make sure it lasts until your next payment on Dec. 1.
