Faith and Lowering Your Bills: Stewardship, Generosity and Help Nearby

Whatever you believe, or if you are not sure what you believe, you are welcome here. Many faith traditions teach the same simple ideas about money: plan carefully, live within your means, give generously and look out for your neighbors. This page puts those ideas to work on your monthly bills, and points you to faith-based and community groups that offer assistance.
Stewardship budgeting: count the cost first
Stewardship means caring well for what you have been given. Luke 14:28 asks who would build a tower without first sitting down to count the cost. Proverbs 21:20 notes that the wise store up what they need, while the foolish use it all up.
- List every bill with its due date and amount. Include yearly and quarterly ones.
- Line bills up with paydays. If you get VA, Social Security or military pay, check your dates and set due dates just after deposits.
- Set aside a small cushion each month, even $10 to $20, for surprises.
- Review once a month. Look for rate increases, fees and services you no longer use.
VA disability deposits follow fixed rules, and some months have none. See all VA payment dates. Other checks follow their own calendars: Social Security, military pay and OPM annuities.
Giving wisely while you lower your bills
Hebrews 13:16 encourages us not to forget to do good and to share. Giving and saving can work together.
- Decide your giving first, then trim costs in other places.
- Turn savings into giving. If a call to your internet provider saves $20 a month, you could give part, save part, or both.
- Give to groups you can check. Ask a charity how gifts are used, and look up its official website before you give.
- Watch for scams. Real charities do not demand gift cards, wire transfers or instant payment. See our guide to money scams to avoid.
- Time, skills and goods count too. Volunteering, rides and meals are gifts.

Tip: When you call, have your bill, ID and proof of income handy. Ask what documents they need before you go.
Helping your neighbors save
Proverbs 3:27 says not to withhold good from those who need it when it is in your power to help.
- Share this page or the GLOW guide with a friend who is struggling with bills.
- Help someone make the call. Sitting with an older neighbor while they call a utility can save them real money.
- Check on veterans you know. Many miss discounts they have earned. See all military discounts
- Start a small group bill night at your church, synagogue or community center to review bills together.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to be religious to get help from a faith-based charity?
No. Many faith-based groups serve their whole community. Catholic Charities USA says its network helps people regardless of their faith, and The Salvation Army says it meets human needs without discrimination. Services vary by location, so ask your local office.
What is the fastest way to find bill assistance near me?
Call or text 211, or visit 211.org. 211 is a free, confidential service from United Way that connects you to local help, including utility bill assistance.
Can I keep giving while I lower my bills?
Yes. Many people set a giving amount first, then cut costs elsewhere, like internet, heating and water bills. Lowering a bill can free up money to give, save or help a neighbor.
What Bible verses talk about budgeting?
Two well-known ones are Proverbs 21:20, about the wise storing up what they need, and Luke 14:28, about counting the cost before you build.
Is the church card on this page an ad?
No. Cape Christian is our home church. The card is a gift we give. It is not a paid sponsorship, and the church did not pay for it.
