Free and Low-Cost Gym Options for Seniors

If you have a Medicare Advantage or certain Medicare Supplement plan, you may already have a fitness benefit. Check that before you sign another gym contract on a fixed income.

Last checked Nov 2026. Fitness benefits depend on your specific plan. Always confirm with your insurer or the program's eligibility tool.

Quick answer: Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover gym memberships. Many Medicare Advantage plans include a fitness benefit such as SilverSneakers, Renew Active or Silver&Fit at no extra premium cost when it is part of your plan. Eligibility depends on the plan, not on age alone. Use the program's eligibility checker or ask your plan before you pay out of pocket.

Local YMCAs, senior centers and community options

AARP notes that local gyms and fitness centers often offer senior discounts, and some YMCAs offer discounts for people 65 and older plus financial assistance based on need. TRICARE's exercise FAQ also points people who are not near a base toward county, city and state facilities, the YMCA and senior centers. Rates are local, so call before you join.

⚠ Check before you go

  • Chain "senior" or "65+" membership specials vary by franchise and change often. Ask the front desk for current senior pricing in writing.
  • Do not assume every Medicare Advantage plan includes SilverSneakers or Renew Active. Ask your plan.

FAQ

Does every senior get SilverSneakers automatically?

No. SilverSneakers is included only when your health plan offers it. Check eligibility or ask your plan.

I have TRICARE for Life. Does that include SilverSneakers?

TRICARE says it cannot pay for SilverSneakers or gym memberships. Some people with TRICARE also have a Medicare Advantage or supplement plan that includes a fitness benefit. Ask that Medicare plan, not TRICARE, about gym benefits.

What if personal training costs extra?

Plan fitness benefits usually cover a basic membership. UHC notes that extras such as personal training or premium classes may cost more at the gym.

A cheaper gym helps. Pair it with the bill cuts you already earned.
